Practical techniques for Acrylics and Gels
Acrylics are one of the least understood materials by most artists, but they certainly are the most versatile. They are not the dull, flat, fast drying products you remember. With the introduction of many new gels, grounds and pigments, it is difficult to know where to begin. In this class you will learn how to create rich saturated oil like glazes and delicate transparent, yet vibrant watercolor washes, thick impasto like grounds, even blend colors that you only thought you could do in oils. In this class we will cover all the basics of acrylics: color-mixing, extending, glazing, creating matte or gloss surfaces, textures and controlling drying times. Gels are the secret to the versatility and beauty of painting with acrylics and in this workshop you will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of gels and grounds. You will also learn how to extend the paint in an economical way and learn which mediums can extend drying times, change the brilliance of the paint or the consistency. This class is about the materials, you can apply the techniques to traditional painting styles or get “loose “ and try some very unique applications. Day One and Two you will create a number of small reference paintings using a variety of paint and gels, unique grounds and mediums. Day Three we will work on a larger scale and end the class with a discussion and demonstration of Varnishing techniques.

All paint, gels and grounds provided
